He went on to produce and register 2,000 transferable receivers for the weapon (pre-1986), but he built the guns incrementally, turning out only a small number at any given time. By the late 1980s, he ran into legal troubles with the ATF, leading him to transfer the receivers to a trusted friend as he mounted a successful defense against the charges.
